Our Vision

Willits Charter School maintains high academic standards while respecting the unique qualities of all learners. We envision a learning community where students develop into thoughtful, involved citizens who have compassion and respect for themselves and others. Challenges and mistakes are embraced as essential learning opportunities, cultivating resilient, confident, and fulfilled individuals.

We are committed to nurturing creative thinkers, problem solvers, and innovators who possess the skills, creativity, and flexibility needed to address local and global issues. Our students develop strong community connections and a sense of service. They strive for personal excellence and develop the agency to positively influence the world.

We recognize that every stakeholder plays a vital role in each student’s academic and personal success. Families are an integral part of our school community and we invite and encourage family participation. Together, we create an environment where all students thrive.

Educational Protection Act

In November 2012, the voters of California passed Proposition 30: the Schools and Local Public Safety Protection Act (EPA) of 2012. In accordance with California Law, schools are required to post the expenditures for the EPA. For the 2025-2026 school year, Willits Charter School anticipates receiving $246,069. Of that money funded, 100% is used to pay for certificated teacher salaries.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide a personalized, rigorous, and engaging education for all students. We strive to foster a love of learning and prepare students for success in college, career, and beyond. We value diversity and equity and are committed to creating a supportive, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all members of our school community.

Program Overview

Willits Charter School is a free, public, independent charter school serving students in grades 6 through 12. We are open to all who wish to attend. We do not charge tuition, teach religious doctrine, or discriminate in admissions policies or employment practices. Our curriculum aligns with Common Core and California State State Standards and our students participate in annual state standardized tests (CAASPP, CAST, and the California Physical Fitness Test). Our original charter was granted in 1998 by Willits Unified School District and was unanimously renewed in 2002, 2007, 2012, 2017 and again in 2025 (until 2030). Willits Charter School functions as its own school district and is not a part of the Willits Unified School District. Both our middle school and high school programs are fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). All students have access to a robust college preparatory curriculum and our high school graduation requirements are aligned with the A-G requirements of the California State University (CSU) and University of California (UC) systems. We partner closely with Mendocino College and our high school students are able to participate in a variety of dual enrollment courses.
